The Aspidistras

Gerardine Coyne & Maria Hodson

Edinburgh 2009 reviews

THE SCOTSMAN

TWO plants, two guitars, two women (one a little taller than the other), and a good hour's worth of entertainment.

The Aspidistras mix music, theatre and comedy to create an original performance. Unpretentious, intelligent and funny, The Aspidistras give all they have throughout their performance. They just want to share what they know, and if there's one thing The Aspidistras know, it is how to keep the spectators intrigued about what is going to happen next. Amongst the wide array of costumes and characters you might just catch a glimpse of Lily Allen and friends singing for world peace and the bickering Holly and Ivy.

Don't be tricked by their pretty faces, however, these girls are fierce. So what is an aspidistra? Well, you
might just have to go and see them to find out.

THREE WEEKS * * * *

Dark, dry and delightful humour from The Aspidistras, aka Gerardine Coyne and Maria Hodson, who went to university in this fair town, have since trained in acting, and now return to Edinburgh to deliver character comedy with class. Their adroit acting and capacity to amuse is revealed as they bring to life an eclectic bunch of peculiar creatures via a series of sharp and stylish sketches. Highlights include the scenes involving a bitter librarian who experiences biscuit bewilderment and rage, an impression of Dan Brown, and a pair of nonchalant musicians with delusions of coolness and musical flair. These foxy females are very funny!
